Landfill Gas to Energy: Turning Trash into Power

What is Landfill Gas?

​Landfill gas (LFG) is a natural byproduct of waste decomposition in landfills. As organic materials break down, they release methane—a potent greenhouse gas. Instead of allowing this gas to escape into the atmosphere, we can capture it, convert it, and use it as an energy source.

How It Works:
  1. Extraction: LFG is extracted from landfills using a network of wells and a blower or vacuum system. These wells tap into the gas pockets within the landfill.
  2. Collection: The collected gas contains methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and trace amounts of other gases. It’s essential to separate and manage this mixture effectively.
  3. Conversion: The captured LFG is then burned in specialized engines or turbines to produce electricity. During combustion, methane is converted to water vapor (H₂O) and CO₂. This process not only generates power but also significantly reduces methane emissions.
  4. Energy Generation: The electricity produced can be used to power homes, businesses, or even entire communities. It’s a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

  • This offsets CO₂ emissions, sulfur dioxide (a contributor to acid rain), particulate matter (a respiratory health concern), and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ).
